MK-Eat #1 $500 Grantee:

Parachute Project 3

Featuring Kati Heck, Colin Matthes

SUMMARY

The Parachute Project is a mobile art organization that hosts one-night only art exhibitions in unused urban spaces throughout Milwaukee. August 19th 2011 the Parachute Project presents its third exhibition featuring internationally esteemed Belgian painter Kati Heck along with local Milwaukee artist Colin Matthes for what promises to be a cutting-edge contemporary art exhibition. Our intention is to reestablish vibrancy and strengthen our community by using art as a means to move people within our city to places that have been overlooked by the inevitable isolation that comes with economic downturn. As members of the Milwaukee community, we refuse to sit passively by as our city empties itself of life and commerce.

NEXT MKEaT

Within the next twelve weeks, we will be working to gain sponsorships as well as team up with other community organizers to seek the perfect venue for the event. We will document our progress and present it at the next dinner.

FUNDING

If chosen we will use the grant toward travel expenses, sending Kati and her partner round trip from Belgium, shipping artwork, building materials, local and national art promotion, insurance, costs for installation and renovating the space to host the event, putting the artist up, and toward all things relevant to guaranteeing the show is a success.

COMMUNITY IMPORTANCE

The Parachute Project makes art accessible to all members of our city by creating an inclusive rather than exclusive experience of art. The spaces we occupy are as much an integral portion of the Project as the exhibition itself. We hope to illuminate both equally, and in that way, build relationships between all participating members of the community.

The Amplifier: A Temporary Neighborhood Gathering Space

SUMMARY

The project is a 3-month art space that will serve as a platform and amplifier for the very diverse Silver City neighborhood.

Pt 1: Begins in May with the opening of the temporary community space. This open-ended artistic venue and gathering place will host events, projects, classes, performances, and shows that celebrate theculture and internal resources of the community.

Pt. 2: The documentation of the happenings (pot lucks, drawing classes, youth art shows, dances, gardening events, discussion groups etc.) will be combined for the conception of a final work of public art created with the community.

NEXT MKEaT

There will be multiple kinds of documentation that will be used to create a visual collage of collected drawings and writings by neighbors. They will be about people, places, experiences, and their hopes and visions for the future of the neighborhood, and share the events, interviews, and ideas that are being gathered in the space.

FUNDING

We have received a WAB artist and community collaborator grant that requires us to find matching funds. This money would help secure our budget to support the cost of the space, art supplies, and food for the events, as well as funding the final project, and installation of the art.

COMMUNITY IMPORTANCE

The goal of the project is to create activities that bring liveliness, awareness, accessibility, and solidarity to the community. Silver City is also a new Zilber Neighborhood. There will be a lot of change happening soon and the dialogs that we start with neighbors now about the future will help guide the decisions and renovations that are about to be made.

Promoting Milwaukee’s Parks

SUMMARY

My Urban Wilderness Project celebrates the joy of experiencing nature in an urban environment, documents the Milwaukee County Park system, and proposes a vision for the preservation and restoration of natural areas.  By introducing a broad range of people to the natural beauty that exists in our community I hope to inspire a greater appreciation for the parks.  My goal is to inspire people to enjoy the natural world near at hand, to become involved in helping to preserve the local environment, and to create a healthy and sustainable urban/suburban lifestyle.

NEXT MKEaT

I will present both a slide show and sample pieces of the work produced for the project. The work will be photographs taken in the parks and a series of posters that promote the goals of the project.

FUNDING

The funding will enable me to print photographs and posters that can be distributed to libraries, schools, and park facilities such as the Domes and Boerner Gardens pavilion.

COMMUNITY IMPORTANCE

Our culture has become increasingly alienated from nature, especially in our inner cities. This is detrimental to the environment and human health. Milwaukee’s park system includes 10,000 acres of natural areas. Budget cutbacks have led to deterioration. The community needs to understand and preserve the value of parklands. Art can encourage the public to reconnect with nature.

AMERICAN RUNESCAPES ENVIRONMENT

SUMMARY

AMERICAN RUNESCAPES ENVIRONMENT is a combination art exhibit /environmental challenge for the people of Milwaukee. I plan to install near billboard-size versions of environmentally themed American Runescapes prints near neglected and polluted outdoor locations in our urban/natural landscape.

American Runescapes join found American photography with modern magazine typography to create a new space for visual and narrative engagement into human experience. By moving up in size and outside the gallery, I will challenge the public to notice these abused landscapes, engage with the power of art in that world, and inspire collaborative efforts to clean up the mess.

NEXT MKEaT

I will bring one of the large American Runescapes and produce a short video of the installations and their impact for showing at the next MKEaT event.

FUNDING

Funding is needed to print oversize prints of my Environmental American Runescapes, and mount them in appropriate and available locations like the abandoned railway foundations along the polluted Milwaukee River across from Estabrook Park. Resources will also finance press releases and organizational communications to explain the initiative and encourage action-based partnerships to clean, reclaim and protect these neglected resources.

COMMUNITY IMPORTANCE

This project is vital to the community because it will result in a greater awareness of the importance of both the Arts and the Environment to the future health of greater Milwaukee. These large outdoor public installations will demonstrate that art is a vital part of our urban landscape that can also play a role in affecting social change.

Huey Crowley presents One Hit Wonders

SUMMARY

The “One Hit Wonders” exhibition will feature one powerful piece from each of a group of 40-50 Milwaukee artists. The exhibition will include performance art, salon style installation, sculpture, paintings, drawings, prints, and additional installation pieces. Seasoned curator Huey Crowley, has selected works that push the boundaries of defining what art is.

NEXT MKEaT

A powerpoint exhibition outlining everything necessary for the project would be presented. At 5-30 minutes long, it will feature all of the artist’s work, and go into detail about why each piece is important to the exhibition.

FUNDING

Funding is needed for things such as: Promotion, covering show costs: painting supplies, renting the space, travel compensation to visit artist studios.. etc.

COMMUNITY IMPORTANCE

This project will tie many Milwaukee communities together in a direct way- school to school, gallery artists to street artists, teachers to students, etc. All ends of Milwaukee will come together to show that this community contributes to pushing the boundaries of art itself.

Heard It Thru the Grapevine

SUMMARY

Create a “crowd participation” music video that explores how women and girls use emulation, pop music, and social video media such as YouTube to claim space for themselves in typically male-dominated spaces. It will also explore how women and girls subvert ideas of romance to address larger issues of power imbalance. I believe in using humor and an inclusive, party vibe as a way of addressing serious issues. My work is like a slumber party with a purpose.

NEXT MKEaT

I will present the finished video at that time.

FUNDING

The money for this project will be used to create props and/or costumes for the video, to purchase additional video editing software/hardware if appropriate, and also to pay for a babysitter during work periods.

COMMUNITY IMPORTANCE

This video will involve the participation of many Milwaukee women and hopefully will help to create a sense of excitement, camaraderie and participation among Milwaukee women, especially within Milwaukee’s art and music communities. The aim of much of my work is to help create an atmosphere with more space for female leadership.

Adventures of Little Misfit

SUMMARY

Once Upon A Time, there was a Little Girl. Her mother died when she was young. Her father loved her very much. Her family did not know how she would fit in. SO……..THEY CALLED HER LITTLE MISFIT.

This project is a one woman solo theatrical production. It is part fairy tale, comedy, fantasy, silent film and homage. Using recollections of growing up, it is a humorous glance at coming of age. The conflict -whether to leave the comforts of home and family and follow your own true path-climax into the final scene and surprise ending.

NEXT MKEaT

The show is about 50 minutes in length. I would be willing to perform the work in its present state of progress to a group of interested participants. I would like the audience to weigh in on the show’s merits, concepts and ideas. In essence, they can mold the work for future presentations.

FUNDING

One of my biggest struggles is funding my one woman shows. I have received financial support in the past but currently am self producing this work. I am in need of photos, costumes, props, sound score, video and web design. Any financial rewards will help cover production costs, fees for collaborators and for marketing this event.

COMMUNITY IMPORTANCE

I began this work two years ago. It was truncated due to things out of my control -a brother with colon cancer, a father with Alzheimer’s and two daughters getting married! The constant juggling of family, home, health, making a living and creating art led me back to the work. These are universally stressful times. Humor and art are transformative.

Daveon’s Drawings

SUMMARY
I’m proposing a video that centers on twelve year-old Daveon Shaw and his drawings. I met Daveon six years ago when his mother Sarah began working as a caretaker for my dementia stricken mother. Despite his speech impediment, he is a young man of incredible exuberance whom I care deeply about. Recently, Daveon started to create cartoon-inspired drawings. The quality of the work and prolific manner with which he produces them astounds me. He loves showing off his new work to me and especially the camera. I will make a piece that highlights this remarkable individual and his vibrant work.

NEXT MKEaT
If chosen, I would screen the completed short video at the next MKEat gathering. I know Daveon would be thrilled to attend this event and see his work appreciated by the Milwaukee arts community. I would also like to make the work available online as a means of increasing access to it while simultaneously drawing attention to the MKEat project.

FUNDING
I would use funding to compensate collaborators who help with the completion of the project. I have a few hours of footage already shot but would appreciate having help with lighting, camera operating, and editing during the forthcoming stages of production. Cinema is an inherently collaborative medium, and I relish the idea of being able to compensate my cohorts.

COMMUNITY IMPORTANCE
In these dire economic/political times the arts are increasingly undervalued and dismissed. I whole-heartedly reject this absurd perspective. This piece will show the power of creative expression as it helps verbally challenged Daveon to cultivate his identity and confidence. It will also highlight the importance of mentorship and advocacy as we bond over a shared love of the creative process.
